The Oshkosh Area Writers Club will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 2, in the lower level conference room of the Oshkosh Public Library. Meetings are free and open to anyone 17 and older.

Create-a-Book Awards Ceremony

The Create-a-Book city wide children's writing contest will hold their awards ceremony at 6:30 Tuesday, April 21 at the Oshkosh Public Library (under the dome). This is the contest we judged a few weeks ago and we're welcome to attend the ceremony.

Fox Cities Book Festival 2015

The Fox Cities Book Festival, April 20-26, has announced their schedule of authors, including Sara Laux Akin, Sarah Gilbert, Jerry Apps, Steven Hazell and Harvey J. Kaye. The entire list and the date/times of appearances can be found at Fox Cities Book Festival.

We're saddened to learn of the death of Paul Christy, who passed away April 8 after recently being diagnosed with brain cancer.

Paul has been with the Oshkosh Area Writer's Club since our first meeting in 2003 and we will miss him greatly.

Lakefly Writers Conference

The Lakefly Writers Conference early-bird registration fee of $45 ENDS TODAY at midnight. Includes lunch on Saturday; Michael Perry is the keynote speaker. 

Other speakers include Robert Thomas, Scott Lynch, John Walser and Wisconsin Poet Laureate  Kimberly Blaeser. Seriously, you won't find a better value for your money!

Judging Contest Entries March 21st

At our Saturday, March 21st meeting, we will be judging the city-wide Create-a-Book contest for Oshkosh students in grades 3 through 5. It's fun, easy...and snacks will be served!

WWA Author Showcase

The Wisconsin Writers Association will sponsor their second annual Author Showcase in conjunction with the Lakefly Writers Conference, May 9, 2015 at the Oshkosh Convention Center. Enjoy a variety of books for sale by Wisconsin publishers and authors at this free event.

Lakefly Writing Contests

The Lakefly Writers Conference (May 8-9) has announced their 2015 writing contests:

Short story fiction:  2500 words or less. Any genre that includes the theme: Temptation

Flash fiction:  500 words or less; any genre.

First Five Pages:  A maximum of the first five pages of an original, unpublished novel; any genre. It must be accompanied by a two-paragraph synopsis. The novel does not need to be completed at the time of submission.


The Jean Nelson Essay: 2500 words or less. Theme: Literary character I would most like to meet.

There's no fee to enter; cash prizes. Deadline is March 15, 2015.

New Release: Nuances of Time

Congrats to Paul Christy on the recent release of his book of poetry, Nuances of Time, edited by Thomas C. Cannon. 

Paul's unique vision of the world exemplifies how language and our perceptions direct us, sometimes away from truth, from God. Paul has collected these poems to share with family and friends but these intimate poems will engage any reader.

Start a Journal!

The beginning of a new year is a great time to start a journal. 

Not sure how to begin? Start small. Describe the physical appearance of your journal, why you chose this particular notebook, note the date and time of your entry, and describe the setting you're writing in.

Meeting reminder / Christmas Party

The Oshkosh Area Writers Club will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20 in the lower level room of the Oshkosh Public Library. 

We'll be holding our annual Christmas Party so please being a wrapped White Elephant gift - an item you already own that is in good or excellent condition that you no longer want/use. After the gift exchange, we'll be heading up to the Library dome to have a group Christmas photo taken. Donuts will be provided but you're welcome to bring a snack to share as well.

We will not be doing any critiques.

Call for Submissions: Buzzy Mag

Buzzy Mag is looking for original science fiction, fantasy and horror short stories up to 10,000 words. Thriller, suspense and paranormal tales that cross into traditional speculative fiction are welcome. E-submissions only. 

The magazine also pays five cents/word for genre book reviews. The book should have a release date of no more than 3 months in the past.
